Antique Nippon Hand Painted Butter Pat Trinket Dish

Antique Nippon Hand Painted Butter Pat Trinket Dish

Just shy of 4” diameter. Hand-painted in Nippon. Japanese porcelain made for export to the United States from 1891 to 1921 is called "Nippon Porcelain" because the word "Nippon" was on each piece. The word was required by the McKinley Tariff Act of 1890. Translated, it means “the sun’s origin’. Originally, these would have been sauce dishes or butter pats, but the little lip makes for an excellent trinket tray or small soap dish.
